Dem Himmel so nah. Wolken in der Kunst

So Close to Heaven. Clouds in Art

 24 May – 2 November 2025

Who hasn’t let their gaze dreamily lose itself in the sky, spotted a face among the clouds or marvelled at changing light phenomena? With their ephemerality and fragile grace, clouds are fascinating. Light and floaty one moment, and heavy and menacing the next, they reflect our moods. Clouds have been inspiring art for centuries. They represent the divine, lofty natural beauty and atmosphere, and impermanence and longing – and these days, climate change, environmental destruction, and war as well. Kunsthalle Emden devotes to this topic an extensive exhibition, which is also an homage to the East Friesian sky. On display are works from various eras and genres, from the traditional landscape through to the contemporary installation. The sky can thus be thus be rediscovered in its poetical and political side at once – but also as a mirror of our inner state and as a cipher of our times.
